Hey, I finally ot rid of all my baby convicts and now have a 20 gal to stock! I was at the fish store and fell in love with the black phantom tetras, so I have 2 of those now, as well as a farlowella. I know the tank isn't as large as it should be for the farlowella, but I really, really like him and don't want to return him to the petshop. I've always had farlowellas, just never in a tank this small. I could give him to my mom who has a 30 gal, but that tank is also full of crazy loaches.
Anyways, I'm planning on adding 4 more black phantoms and either a group of zebra loaches or cories. It will be a live planted tank, although I must admit I have a black thumb for gardening. Even my cactus die. But I did used to have some enourmous amazon swords before my convicts destroyed them. I have driftwood and a half sand, half gravel substrate ( might make it all gravel, haven't decided yet).
I would like to put some rams or some sort of colorful apistos into it. I'd love for them to breed, but can they with my black phantoms around? Would they get along with the phantoms? Which kind do you suggest? How many could I fit and what combonation of genders would work best?

And my second question...I'm down to one convict after getting rid of all my others. He's my buddy. He's about 6 inches long, 3 years old. He's a really mean fish so he's either been living alone or been living with his arch nemesis a yoyo loach ever since he killed all my other cichlids a couple years back. He lives by himself in his 20 gal long where he has been for most of his life. It never really occured to me that it might be too small, but I'd just like to know. He's a really active convict, not a hider like my other lone ones have been. Really full of character and swims up whenever I come buy so he can try to intimidate me. So is the 20 long big enough? And is there any kind of algae eater that he could live with?

Thanks guys!

your water should be your guide to which apistogrammas you can keep. if its hard and alkaline i would go with a. cacatuoides and a. borelli, if your water is soft and acidic you could go with any apisto's or rams. of cause you could just put any fish in any water but they will not thrive and will die much sooner than if they were in the water they prefer. on the ratio of how many the only apisto's i would keep in more than one pair (female, harem) per tank is the a. nijsseni group ie; apistogramma nijsseni, a. panduro, a. baenschi and a. norberti to name a few as the males of this group are known to be very hard on the females, some killing many females before you can get a breeding pair.

as for a algae eater to go with a convict, possibly a bristlenose pleco or a chinese algae eater and i would think a 20G long would just about be big enough

yes they will, but they will have to stand up to the convict's, see thats all that is in this tank.
by the way bob, i thought you were dead!

LOL...

I'm still around...painting pictures of happy fish...j/k.

(just an admirer of his work and was actually watching one of his shows @ the moment I signed up for this forum. )

I've never had any type of cichlid before(which is why I've been reading a lot in this part of the forum)

Are convicts normally an aggressive fish? A friend of my has a breeding pair of them in with a Jd and they nip at the jd when they're spawning, otherwise, they leave the jd alone.

i love watching repeats of his shows, sooooo relaxing and what a talent. i was gutted to learn of his death.
convicts are notoriously nasty so should only be kept with other pugnacious cichlids
