i was reading the pinned post above about making a carpet and a wall of these plants and i was just wondering if you HAVE to have a co2 system?? ino this is obviously better but i cant really afford it

Not necessarily it all depends on what other plants you have and if your tank is heavily planted. If it is then yes

CO2 depends on what lighting and the types of plants you have...

I believe that if you want your riccia to pearl then lighting and CO2 must be right.

in short riccia (especially dwarf) - yes as it's a fast grower. Java moss - No as it's a slow grower.

this rule is generally true for all plants ie slow grower - no need for co2 and vice versa.

i would try it with java moss first and see how you get on. it's much cheaper than riccia and much more easily available.

I got riccia to grow ok without CO2 but its growing like mad and pearling with my added DIY CO2.

The riccia I'm shifting at the mo is from a tank without CO2. Its gone mad recently but it is floating so its right by the denerrle plant lights.
