I think you can buy boxes to put your filter in, but am not sure from where. Sorry! You could always put it inside a pop sock or stocking, or make a guard from undergravel filter pieces.

I'd go with the undergravel filter pieces as they're cheap to buy, aquarium safe, fit together like a jigsaw puzzle and have large enough gaps for the crap to get through to your filter but hopefully not your puffers.

Place some fine netting/pantyhose over the filter intake (what make of filter is it?)...

Just thought of something obvious - a simple sponge filter that uses an airline to pull waste water through the filter would be nice and safe.

However, I know puffers are supposed to be messy eaters so I don't know if this would be efficient enough filtration.

My filters a hvdor interpet ipf4 duo whatever that means?

Those filters are good for up to a 4 foot tank. How big is your tank? If it's a lot smaller then it could be just too strong and you might want a smaller filter.

They do have a flow control thingie on them though so you could try turning it down to the lowest setting and see if it helps.

Some fish are just too curious and will always get themselves stuck! I've lost 5 of my 7 pygmy corys to their own nosiness and one of my gouramis (tried to swim behind the filter, turned itself upside down and then got stuck behind the sucker and couldn't free itself). You do have to worry about their mental agility sometimes! :/

Don't know very much about puffers I'm afraid, but they will get more aggressive towards each other as they get older. Should ask in the oddballs section for more advice.

My female dwarf gourami seems dead set on swimming up, into the outflow of my Fluval 2 plus filter... just as well the flow is too strong for her...

i have a 4ft by 12inch by 15 inch tank

Hi Tuffers,

You mention you have quite a large tank, but without a picture of it, it would be difficult to say whether or not it would be totally suitable for dwarf puffers.

DP's need large tanks, 5 gallons each and tanks that are either heavily planted or tanks that are broken up with lines of sight with other ornaments. This is because they are aggressive, and not fussy with it, they will attack each other without warning.

If you filter is simple with a small intake then covering it with some tights of some sort sounds like a reasonable option to make sure they don't get hurt.

You don't say how long your tank had been setup, so the lack of beneficial bacteria may have killed them, or they could have simply not acclimated very well.

Whatever happened, sorry to hear of your losses. I keep DPs myself and i'd be devastated if I lost any, they're all full of character.

Are you thinking of replacing your losses?

Well the tank is 35 USG, so 6 dwarf puffers would be fine in there assuming there are no other fish. (not that they should be kept with other fish anyway)

The point I was making was without lines of sight broken up it wouldn't be out of the question for them to bully each other with nowhere to hide. I see what you're saying though, just exploring all the avenues.
