I recently bought a dwarf zebra lion and it died the next day during the day. When I tested the water everything was was perfect. When I went back to the pet store the other lion was dead also. It seemed to happen around the same time, the other one was a black volitan and another dwarf zebra. Is there something that could have killed a lion but nothing else? I tested thier water in the bag and everything was in check. The ammonia was detectable but nothing I would believe to kill a fish.

Here he is (before passing away the next day) the other fish I got from there is still happy as can be:

How long did the lfs have it for? if they were new to the pet shop it could just be shock from all the travelling round.

I think less than a week probably closer to 2-3 days. Mine dies at pretty much the same time as theirs. I guess is was just handling. :( I miss it, such a beautiful fish!

It might simply be shock of course but sudden deaths of fish (espeically of the same batches that arrive in store from a supplier) sometimes makes me wonder if they were caught using cyanide.

Did I read that right...you said ammonia was detectable? In whose water, yours or the lfs'? Ammonia is toxic, expecially with marine fish, at any detectable level. For the most part, any fish placed in or purchased in ammonia, well, not much other can be said ..that's the smoking gun. JMO. SH

It was either 0 or 0.25 from the petstore. My tanks have 0.

Navarre you might be on to something there! As sad as it was to lose him I know there will be other fish in the sea ;) he was just so darn adorable! Atleast its more like there was nothing I can do, and that makes me feel better about the situation.

0.25 Ammonia is one of several different causes of death. That is enough to kill a fish.
Another possible reason is starvation. They dont eat everyday in the wild, plus being starved before being shipped, and some LFS prefer to sell their fish before making sure they eat.
Another reason why your fish may have died, like navvarre brought up, is because of the poor capture methods still employed by many fishers.
