What is best in a 20 gallon tank: a male and a female or a male and two females (to give the females a break!)... I guess two males is a bad idea?

Two females..one male only. They tend to get agressive when they start to claim a territory. Two females would be good so the one female doesn't always get harrassed by the male.

Yep, 2 or more females per male is always best. I generaly say to provide 10 gallons per male and 5 gallons per female. You could also keep a couple of males (no females) but you are better off with the mixed group
