I have a 29 gallon tank, 6 white clouds , 5 neons, 2 otto's and 2corys. The tank has been cycled for 3 month's. I don't overfeed and do regular water changes. Ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 20. The water looks as though it has dust floating through it, the fish are fine and everything seems to be ok. Any suggestions on what the dust looking stuff in the water could be?

Normally that stuff comes from new gravel that has't been rinsed good. Have you added any new gravel recently? Does the filter make the surface of the water move around because your filter could be to weak to cause enough surface agitation to get rid of the dust. Or if you have a really dusty place or someone dusted around the tank recently the dust could have gotten in the water.

What do you have on the base of your tank?

I have beach sand and the water always looks a tiny bit cloudy because it naturally stirs up. I havent noticed any negative effects, and its only really an eyesore when the sun is shining on the tank (which rarely happens).

I have gravel, it was rinsed good and haven't added any lately. The dusty water almost looks like a thousand tiny bubbles but when I turn off the filter to feed them is when it looks like its drifting around. Haven't had any negative effects, and it only seems to be near the top 3rd of the tank. Thanks for your replies and any help would be appreciated.

Could be the bottom feeders stirring up your substrate... my water was 'crystal' until my four Julii Corys went in there... their constant rooting about resulted in a 'haze' of fine substrate particles hanging in the water... I just placed the 'extra fine' polyester media in my fluval plus filter - between the two foam pads... water's clear again...

You shouldn't turn your filter off to feed the fish, there isn't really a point because you could just feed them on the end of the tank that the filter isn't on so it doesn't move the food on.

Hi. It could just be air bubbles. My filter makes all kinds of minute bubbles that are visible at night when the lights are on. If you don't look closely then you might think they were small particles of something. If they are only on the top part of your tank then i might guess that that's what they are. If they are small particles of something floating around, then i would think that your filter should take of them within a couple of days under normal circumstances.

It does look like really small air bubbles, and the fish seem to be fine , I'll keep and eye on it and thanks everyone for your help.
