I have a stupid question, no doubt some of you will probably giggle but

what is the difference between a filter and a powerhead, i mean i know a filter has pads n wool n carbon n stuff to catch the nasties in the aquarium and make the bacteria colonize with right amounts of ammonia, but what exactly does apower head do? Does it just make the current in water move better, or can you make filters outta them? sorry for sounding daft

a powerhead is for moving water, so unless your filter is powered by your air pump, your filter has a powerhead to suck the water up through the sponges etc., and blow out the clean water back into your tank. Some people, paticularly marine hobbyists, use a powerhead by itsself as well as the normal filtration to increase the water current.
so:
filter- cleans your water
powerhead- moves your water.

hope this helps, and remember there are no stupid questions!

Hmm. I didn't know that!!!!! learn something new everyday!
