Hi...
I have a friend with 30gal tank which was in the middle of a party he recently had. Well someone decided to "out" their cigarette in the tank and leave the remaing filter in the tank. To his horror he noticed it the next day after he recovered :p. He called me all freaked out and worried about the possible side-effects it could have. He's fairly new at fish keeping and doesnt want a disaster on his hands. Could any of the chemicals ( thers lots ) in the cigarette cause any problems. He has since done two 20% water changes and everything seems to be fine. But i told him id look into it ;) ....Advice or comments of personal experience would be great.....Thanks!

Some people I don't no, just run some black carbon, he has done a water change so that's a good thing, I wouldn't think it would of caused to much trouble, maybe just another water change to be on the safe side.

I've never experimented myself ;) but if nothing's happened yet I doubt it will...especially since anything which may have leached into the tank has no been diluted with water changes. he might wanna tape the lid shut next time though!

Thanks for the replys...he/myself are worried because the cigarette just dissolves in the water and parts of it could be anywhere...plus he has tiger barbs and knowing tigers like i do they probably nipped at it like food. Hopefully it was just a scare. Hes keeping a close eye. Thanks again!

something like that happen to my sister's poor betta...at college, a friend decided "george" would like a drink of vodka....luckily, george made it out okay!

What an idiot, i don't understand some people, it's lucky george made it :)

Fish are generally a pretty hardy bunch if they have dedicated owners. Water changes would probably be the best solution. If they ate part of the cigarette they might get sick but more likely they will just pass it through. I would probably try to keep an eye on all the water conditions just in case something happens. And I would probably recommend not having people smoke inside anymore because drunk people do stupid things.

IMO The fish probably wouldnt have eaten it. They are pretty smart and Iv seen mine spit out a new kind of food because they dont like it, or they notice its not the same as their other food. Mine will usually fast themselves for a day or 2 when I change their food. Then when they realize there not going to get anything else they start eating. So the point of my story is that since this only happened once, they probably almost ate it and spit it back out. Otherwise your friend would probably have dead fish already. Apperantly only one cig can cause a baby or small child to be severely sick. So a fish would probably not survive.

hopfuly he got it out befor they became hooked!

if the fish seem upset or agitated he might want to try adsing a fue cigs dayly......

and incase you cant tell im just kidding.

its not uncommon at all for people with an F-ed up mind to do things like that.
my friend adam had a party a fue months ago and the same thing happend. i told him to tape his tank shut but he didnt liten to me.

WTF is wrong with those kind of people!! do they get satisfaction from killing and harming animals?

Haha there addicted..

Just drunk people who think itll be funny...really i dont know....i myself wouldnt even think about doin gthat...but people outside of the hobby have a diiferent look on things than us. So far the fish are doing fine...but thers alot of unwated chemicals in cigarettes..such as Hydrogen cyanide/ Benzene / Formaldehyde etc...any one of these im sure can kill fish in the right amount. thanks for all the replys B)

i hate idiots like that, at a wedding i was once at they had bettas in 1/5 gal bowls on every table, the kids started pouring stuff into them so i took all the bettas home, and sold them :p
