I bought some new Neon Tetras at the weekend and compared to the new ones, the originals I already had look dull.
I was wondering if this is to do with the food I am feeding them as they are just having flakes at the moment.
Also the originals were very cheap, maybe they're just not as good quality fish as the newbies.

If it is because of their food, what should I be feeding them other than flakes???
I know they can eat other things & I want to give them a varied diet now anyway but I'm not sure what to give them.
Some advice would be excellent :)

i only feed my neons tetraruby (crushed to almost powder) and they are brightly coloured
i bought 1 lot at pet@home and two lots at waterllife the ones from waterlife where dull but now there brightly coloured (same as others)

ive noticed that the ones i have change depending on the amount of light they are exposed to. they are usually pretty dull when i first turn the lights on, but as time goes on they become alot brighter.

Thanks, I might try that tetraruby :)

Do they really get brighter through the day??? I thought that was just my eyes in the morning

they do abit

so obviosly (sp.) light affects them aswell?

when researching neons before getting mine, I read that after a prolonged period of time in the dark, they will become less bright. But they didn't say what "prolonged" would be in the case, so I dunno. Mine seem bright all the time at the min. I feed frozen food a couple of times a week.

Yes, they would lose all the neon color when they go to sleep. After the light goes off, they also turn off their neon sign. And when the Sun goes up(light in the case of captibity), they turn the neon sign back on again. I imagine, it must be the way of survival. Since while they are in the resting/sleeping at night, they don't want to be noticeable especially to the potential predators. However, when they are awake, they would like to advertise their presense especially toward the other sex. That is why when they are in mating condition, most of the male fish color get brighter, some female of some spicie would also.
Sometime, they don't color up as bright when there are no competition or luck of the other sex as well as when the fish get old and past their prime. I guess it just the survival of nature that fittest, most vigourus, strong fish would be the first one to mate to ensure the survival of the specie.
And of course, some nutrition or luck of it may affect the color. However, most of the main brand fish flakes should be well balanced. But variation of food is good. And some live food is good but some you may need to watch the diseace.
Anyway, the Neons are omnivous. They can eat pretty much anything from meat to vegetables.
I feed mine as well as several flakes and palets, occasional live culture of microworms, daphnia and BBS. They also get some scrap of meat but not seasoned like finly chopped up beef, chicken, shrimp. Also they really like the boiled or steamed green pea but no skin. You can pop frozen pea in the microwave for a minute or so and squeesh the skin off and mush it with your fingers and toss in the tank. All my fish go after them, Neon, Glowlight, Diamonds, and Corys. I read some expert of Tetras feed butter squash and it improve the color of the fish. I even feed them crumb from my toast.
So anyway, you can feed almost anything but remember to not feed to much. That would foul water. Also I woould avoid too oily food for same reason. I believe they enjoy the variation of food.

sounds like they get everything in your tank!

mine get flake

what frozen food would you suggest? bloodworm? my general community get bloodworm and flake everynight but my neon tank only get flake

Wow! thanks NEONCORY, that was a very informative post. much more than I got from reading my fish book. thanks :good:

Yes I agree, that was very informative, thanks.
They're gunna be some very happy little fishies :)

No problem.
Neons are always my favorite fish and also first fish I kept. And I can't imagine the day I don't have any. And I maybe minority on this but I do like the looks of Neons better than Cardinals.
Anyway, I'm glad I can be a help for the Neon owners because they are one of the beautiful peaceful fish. :good: :fish: :fish: :fish:

I keep 10 neons in a 8gal planted. Oddly, though the rest are fine, one is dull constantly. He just looks like a 'normal' neon, but without the irridecence. I guess very occationally one is not as colourful as the others for some reason.

Excellent post, NEONCORY.

My neon tank is heavily planted toward the back and more open toward the front. When they've been chilling out in the foliage and come out, they're a little dull, but if they hang out in front for any length of time, they brighten right up.

I have noticed that mine can be duller first thing in the morning but after they have been in the light for a little while they are really bright.

I was told that a varied diet also helps to brighten them up. I rotate the food I give them between flake, crushed peas, bloodworm and brine shrimp. It seems to do the trick.

when you feed them bloodworm, do you chop them up at all? The worms seem quite large compared to my neons!
