I think You Beta has dropsy. He has become extremely bloated in the pat 2 days. His scales are protruding. How do I treat it? It is 11:00 here so I am do a full water change tomorrow.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news... but when the scales start protruding there's a pretty low chance they make it :(

Try doing an epsom salt bath, and feeding pea.

Keep him isolated and make sure his water is extra clean.... maybe raise the temp up a little too.

Here's some info copied from some fishy books I have...

1st:
Dropsy/"Malawi Bloat"
Symptoms: swollen body, esepcially abdomen, due to build-up of fluids in the tissues.
Cause: enviromental, or organ failure. "Malawi Bloat", which affects east african mouthbrooding cichlids, is caused by exessive salt levels, high nitrates, or unsuitable diet.
Treatment: None; remedying the cause occasionally effects the cure.

2nd:
DROPSY
It is not always possible to treat fish ailments successfully, and the illness known as dropsy is exeptionally hard to counter. It is often seen in goldfish, which infected individuals suffering from a swollen abdomen which causes them to have difficulty swimming. Not all cases seem to have infectious origins, but affected fish lose their appetites, and in the case of infectious dropsy, death will follow rapidly. Dropsy is often the result of a bacterial disease, although the illness does not seem to be highly infectious, and it rarely reaches epidemic proportions.

3rd:
Bloat, or dropsy, is a serious condition often caused by a fungal or bacterial infection. Isolate affected fish as a precaution, but this does not normally prove highly infectious.

Good luck!

Also! Maracyn-two states on it's package that it treats dropsy. I have never personally been able to try it. But it's worth the thought, if you can do it. There are also a few other medications out there that say they treat dropsy also so you may want to check those out. But as we all know dropsy is often a fatal problem and is quite difficult to cure unless caught early.

I used interpet number 9 anti internal bactiria a few months back to successfuly treat dropsy, so I personaly would use that. Good luck with whatever treatment you choose to use.

I got some treatment for it. I am hoping it works. The scales are only protruding around the bloated area though. I am going to try to give him a pea and hope that the pea and medicine will help him.

He ate a pea and his swelling is no longer swelling  I gave him the medication a couple days ago and now no more protruding. I just looked at him a couple minutes ago  Maybe he never had dropsy  Whatever was wrong with him it is gone now :hyper: I am going to go ahead and return Carmel and You Beta to there normal tanks. :good: Thankyou for all the info though. I do not know what was wrong with him but it looked like a case of Dropsy. Now I am confused  But still happy it is no longer with You Beta
