I have a synodontis eupterus and he has been swimming on the surface of the tank, upside down since i woke up today. His stomach is massively swollen (with what looks like air) and he's just laying on his back.
Is this dropsy?
I've read some things on the internet and it's the only thing that seems to fit.
How can i help him :shout: He looks like he's about to slip away :(

Any help would be appreciated- thanks!

My syno usually looks like he's swallowed a golf ball after a goodmeal its natural and healthy. If the scales are sticking out it's dropsy if not dont worry. Syno's swim upside down alot they are upside down catfish mine always rests upside down actually he's barely the right way up.

Yea mine does too usually- but this time it's different. He's been there all day, upside down and gasping and his stomach is actually protruding out of the water. He looks in trouble and he can't move really.

I'm thinking i need to change the water because he certainly isn't well :(

Could be bacterial infection or viral. I'd a water change straight away maybe it's your stats? wilder might be able help list your water stats and you should get an answer much easier. Also what size ishe and his tank??

The tank is 24" long and 12" high and wide. I'll change the water now. I've only had the catfish (2 of them) for about 3 weeks- before that i had one lonely parrot cichlid. He is about 5cms long.

I guess i should change the water! (by the way i have no idea as to the size in gallons as the tank and fish were given to me)

Sorry he's not going to make it he's dying, his breathing gone and it's swim bladder. Sorry not much to be done now.
