Dropsy

I think one of my female guppies has dropsy, i have been told its too late for her (this was about 10 days ago, and she seems to be getting better ) I just wondered how can i stop this from spreading in my tank?? i'm getting quite worried now as i have seen one of my female guppies with a kinda yellowy browny whity thing sticking out of her (round) it doesnt seem to bother her but what is it?? and how can it be treated?? i'v also spooted another female guppy (why is it always females??) which looks like one of her scales have fell of or something (very small part) and i was wondering if that was an infection or just were she's scrapped herself on the stones or something.

do you have your water parametres? (ammonia,nitite etc) how often do you do water changes in your tank & how much do you do??
illness is often caused by poor water quality. can you get a photo of your guppy with the thing sticking out??? if you can answer these q's it will help us try & help you & your fishies.

im no expert but in the past ive had a fish suffer with popeye (or dropsy, not quite sure as they are closely linked) and i was advised to treat with myxazin. this is a broad range bacterial med and dropsey is a bacterial infection . i did a part water change first and then completed a 5 day course of treatment which seemed to stop anything else getting the desease. also it was safe to use with scaleless fish!

Nath i'll see if they sell that in my LFS and if they do i'll buy some.

Milly i'll try get a test kit so i can get the parametres as my other has run out. I change 1/4 of the water every week and i always clean the algea and stringy algea of the tank at least once a week. I'v tried taking some pictures and i only managed to get a few because she wouldnt stay still, i'll put them on if you want but i dont think they'll be any use as you cant see the mark.

Does the coloured thing sticking out of the fish does it look like a parasite or string, check to see if it has a forked tail.

no she doesnt have a forked tail and it just looks like a whity yellowy spot thing that stinks out
