Tank size: 96 litre

nitrite:0
nitrate:0-10

tank temp:75

Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior): Within one hour Neon Tetra, bloated up like a balloon (twice its size and then some), no scales stuck out though. Appearing to have a fit, swimming nose down. No colour change and was still trying to eat.

Volume and Frequency of water changes: Due today after 2 weeks

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank: Just added green algae guard.
Tank inhabitants: 5 Danios, 2 Bronze Corys, now 2 Neon Tetras and 2 Dwarf Gourami, and a snail.

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration): Just added a proper resin ornament (sounds tacky but isn't and is safe) Did this as a stone in my tank was causing rises in PH levels.

Exposure to chemicals: None

Suddenly and without warning last night one of my Neon Tetras blew up like a balloon and was in immense distress, immediately sectioned it into tank and hummed and ha'd for ten more minutes. Was obviously VERY ill and so decided to euthanise it before it exploded.

Question is if the scales were not stuck out and it happened so quick, then is it dropsy and are my other fish now at risk? Could I have done anything for the fish or was it passed it? Felt very sick droppping it into the ice water but it went very quickly and it suffered no more...poor thing

dropsy is normaly caused by poor water conditions and it can spread but I have read it very rarely spreads

How long has the tank been set up as she have amonnia reading, water change.

What your tap ph, what type of stone was it.

Dropsy is a build up of fluids, once the scales stick out organ failure.
Dropsy can spread if a fish pecks at a dead fish body who had dropsy, always best to issolate them.

Just want to check that the neon tetra red stipe dosn't look bleached out.

I think someone already said this, but as a backup concurring opinion, dropsy is caused by a variety of different diseases. It in and of itself isnt a disease but a symptom. WHen the kidneys or heart begin to fail, fluids build up and expand the fish, causing scales to protrude. It can be caused by bacterial, viral, fungal, and protozoan infections. It is almost always fatal because once an organ is failing, it is super difficult for it to regain function and allow the fish to be healthy again.
