Help needed big time

3 days ago i noticed that one of my old girls (first ever bought female betta) was bloated out and was pineconing so i removed her and treated her with epsom salts how ever she sadly died yesterday. On finding her like that i treated the tank with a Internal Bacteria treatment as this is meant to treat the cause of dropsy and i have the final treatment to add tomorrow. However i have just noticed that my Little MGCT who seemed fine yesterday is now also pinconing so i have now removed her and started with the epsom salts. All my beautifal breeders are in there and i fear i am going to loose them all at this rate. What else can i do. I do also have Octozin which is meant to help but i will have to wait a week before i can add that after this treatment.

OMG hun I don't know what the answer is, after losing Demi I'm having a similar problem with fin rot, whilst some seem to be absolutely fine and I'm treating the tank, others are in trouble. I don't know what to say, massive hugs and luck for the next few days and I'll definitely speak to you tomorrow xxx

hi devon, are any of the ones developing dropsy related or from spawns that u lost a parent to dropsy

octozin needs to be added at the first signs of infection to make a difference, once the fluid under the scales is too advanced it will have no impact, the bacteria that causes the spread of dropsy is from the advanced stages of an infection so you now need to keep up with frequent water changes to reduce the bacteria in the water and hopfully it will be sorted that way. good luck

yea i read that hun, was hoping to catch you online to pass on some well needed hugs. I can't believe you have had such a break out of it, its so strange it must have been brought in on one of the new girls.

No well, i can't say about the first girl to get it, she was a pet shop job from about 2 years back but i doubt very much that the CT was as she was from Joby and her fish have always been top class.

Oh dear so its a case of crossing fingers and toes that water changes can do it. Well i will start tomorrow with a 75% change on the tank.

Cheers for all your help (and hugs) its all appreciated

One of my girls has dropsy at the moment, the tanks been treated with anti internal and some epsom salts and shes still alive, shes been pineconed for over a week, im surprised she's still going! Id keep medicating for internal bacteria or maybe totally sterlise the tank

awww no Hunny,
 i am keeping my fingers crossed for you!!
:-( keep us updated!!

Well the tank is emptying now. I am going to add more of the internal bacteria treatment once i refill. My MGCT seems to have lost some of the pineconing now but is still very swollen, she is looking a bit confused as to why the walls of her tank are closer than normal, its a big change from a 300ltr to a 25ltr.

I hope your girls pulls through it Zoe sounds like she's a fighter for sure.

Thanks for the support from you all too, it really does help

At least you guys have a chance of saving your fish! I had one girl die unexpectedly of dropsy last Friday, and then one of my boys was not eating and acting lethargic, so I started to treat him. Next thing I know he's pineconned and dies. It seems for me once I find them pineconned they die shortly after that. This is really my first time dealing with dropsy so I'm still learning yet. I just didn't even have a chance to save either one. I really hope everyone else is having better luck than I am with the dropsy!

Well at least the rest of my fish seem healthy now... knock on wood!

Dropsy is when the fish's scales pop out. So when you look at them from above, they resemble a pinecone.
Usually an internal bacterial infection will cause the fish to bloat, which then causes dropsy to occur.

Or something like that.

I've had 2 fish die of it.
First was my betta Marius. He just suddenly became extremely bloated. Pineconed really bad and died a week? later... (maybe a day or so less than a week).
It was god aweful to look at.. I still get the willies just thinking about how my poor fish looked.

And then our Blue Ram became ill and developed a mild case of it.

Anyways... I really hope everyone's fish who has it will pull through.

Amunet is right, and it sure isn't a nice thing to see. I hate to think how the poor fish must feel to be that swollen.
