I just got home from work (long long 12 hour shift of people in pain, throwing up, doctors, dieing, the works...) ONLY to find that all 3 of my guppies were dead... along with 1 platy.

all of my neon tetras and head/tail light tetras were fine, the other 3 platys fine, peppered cory happy as always.

Tested the water.... pH 6.5, ammonia was 0.25, nitrite 0, nitrate 0.

My tank has been cycling for 3 weeks now. I was starting to get nitrites and nitrates at one point with 0 ammonia.. now something has made it go back to the start of cycling.

I got a new heater... set it to 82 like usual..

I DONT GET IT.

I did a 80% water change yesterday!!! and yes i used water conditioner...

....all i can think is its the ammonia that is killing them. ugh, people die at work, fish die at home.. ive HAD IT!

.25 ammonia shouldnt kill them its impossible to even get my water below that point (gogo city water). Although I cannot say what is killing them I doubt its that lvl of ammonia.

has the tank been getting daily water changes?? I wonder how long the fish have been exposed.

I know you're busy (i'm in the same line of work), but to ensure you cycle you're tank without fatalities, you should be doing daily water changes. I think you'll only have to be doing them for a couple more weeks. :good:

Have you done a water test on the tap water? Is there perhaps something in there that's causing a problem?

Your peppered corys will be very very uncomfortable at that temperature, they prefer the lower temps of 21-25 degree. You should not be adjusting the temperature to cycle the tank quicker, while doing a fish in cycle.

Your filter should process the ammonia to 0 in a 12 hour period (or sooner) if its coming out of the tap at 0.25. So you shouldnt really have a problem?

Ammonia and nitrite levels do bounce around a bit when cycling, especially if you aren't/can't always change water regularly.

What test kit are you using? Unless you are using r/o water your nitrate wouldn't likely be at zero, as said before bring your temps down as they are quite high for them fish, that is'nt likely to be the factor of why they died but there must be some reason, just try the daily water change if you can and hopefully things will pick up plus keep testing the water. Hope all gets sorted soon.

well, I lost ALL of my guppies and 1 platy. Another platy has very red gills and a red streak. The other is hiding (very unusual)... so i can only assume they are on their way too.

Ammonia this morning was 0.6, Nitrite 0.8... did a 50% water change.

And turned down my temp as others have suggested. (I have just been told that turning up the temp can prevent ick... (which i have had issues with in this past).

Catfish is pretty lively.. but i can see him sleeping in places at times and not moving, maybe just uncomfortable? anyways i turned down the temp.
