I was taking the lid off the tank and dropped the corner of the lid, where the lights are in the tank.

Thankfully the electric was off and I pulled the lid out quickly, the corner had a dunk into the water. I put the lid on the floor on a cloth to let the water drain out, im not sure if lots of water got inside the glass that covers the lights but there were certainly trickles on water in their.

Now what do i do? My gut instinct is never to use it again, water/electric not a good combination.

Can anyone help, will it dry out eventually on its own, I wondered if it is a sealed electrical unit as its in a fish aquarium anyway, condensation etc (but I dont expect they are made to be dunked into water though - I should'nt make a joke out of it but only someone as daft as me could drop it in the tank!!)

If I cant use it would you advise get a electrician to test it? (probably be cheaper to buy a new tank!)

Can you buy just the lids of aquariums and so I can replace it?

Be grateful if anyone can give me some advice.

Thank you

ps. im not quite a newbie, had the tank for 2 years, so you think I would be used to lifting the lid off by now to clean the tank!!

It'll be fine once it's dried out completely. I've dropped running lights in tanks before, so it's not just you!

You should be able to remove the glass cover (most slide out, but yours might be screwed on) which will help it dry properly.

Phew - oh thank you, I thought I completely ruined it!!

I did have a look at the glass to see if i could remove it but its thin metal clips that did'nt seem to want to unclip, so I was unsure whether to give them a good pull, thought it would be just my luck I would crack the glass too!! I had a quick look in the user manual and no instructions how to remove it. I will have a look again at the clips and see if I can yank them.

I did put the lid back on the tank after a while, would you suggest lifting the lid off again (hopefully not dropping it in the water this time!) remove the glass and leave it off to dry for a few hours?

Thank you so much for getting back to me (I even feel a little better to know im not a complete plonker then, if you have dropped things in too :) )

There must be a way to remove the glass; otherwise how would you change the tubes? Even the most cynical manufacturer wouldn't make you buy a whole new hood, surely?!

I'd take the lid off the tank and leave it to dry out overnight in a warmish place and it should be fine.

At least yours was swtiched off when you dropped it in (I am more careful about swtiching things off before I work on tanks now!)

Take a picture of the hood? Maybe someone could help you, see if they have the same one.

I've also dropped my lid in also while light was running. Lucky the fish had been moved prior to this as i caught the light on the edge of the tank and smashed it -_-
And now i cant get the bulb anywhere -_-

Sorry delay replying, pleased to say I did as you recommended and left the lid off to dry for a while. My brother popped up the next day to have a look at the fittings to see how to release the glass (easy when shown how!!) bit difficult to explain, but had to pull the metal fitting on your finger towards you slightly, then lift up and and released around the catches (not designed well, if you have long nails!! that's my excuse) . So thankfully my brother also turned on the electricity and hey presto all working fine!! Phew panic over.

Thanks again to you both.

Ah, that's good news, I'm pleased you don't have to pay for new :)
