There is no exact shade you should be looking for.

Blue - too low.
Dark Green - you want a little more.
Mid/grass green - fine.
Limeade - about the max you want to go to.
Yellow - go buy some more fish.

I have mine at grass green as per my avatar.

What type of drop checker is that in your avatar ?

I think mine is dodgy.. and seams to change up the way but never back down..

A drop checker is a drop checker. These used to be the standard glass ones but now the 'chameleon' ones tend to be easier to find.

These were called 'teardrop'.

The Chameleon ones are just as good.

I doubt there is anything wrong with your DC causing problems. They are a simple case of gaseous exchange between the tank water at the entrance, the air vacuum within the DC and the solution within the DC. Therefore any problems are more likely to be with the solutions that are added.

sometimes you can run it into yellow though, i used to but now i run it at the lime ade colour because i know there is enough CO2 (so no algae problems because it is low, and i know the plants can get enough)
