ive set up a 30L again for the return of sick betta.
ive had to do loads of water changes and still these are high
nitrite 0.8
nitrate 15
all thats in the tanks is 2 plant cuttings, gravel heater and undergravel filter, i added some filter media from main tank but it still aint helped

Undergravel filters take a while to mature just like normal filters. How long has it been

its been about 9 days now but when i originally set it up it was done by 9 days
 
The media for a UGF is actually the substrate. That is why most people have gotten away from them. Doing gravel vacs actually can harm the bacteria colony and they are very difficult to clean. If there is a way you can change to a HOB or external filter, you would be much better off.
 
I was gonna say that!

It might take longer, Its not an excact science. THe fact you have No2 and No3 at all suggest its working

yeah it has crossed my mind, i must admit i had to completely clean due to his previous illness, i had placed the media from my filter directly on the substrate to add the required elements
