Driftwood vs bogwood

There is a good link at The Skeptical Aquarist:

http://www.skepticalaquarist.com/docs/aquascaping/wood.shtml

It discusses the differences in the types of wood.

Generally, bogwood will be a darker, blackish brown and rough; driftwood will be a silvery brown and smooth-looking. However, the wood you see marketed at your LFS may not really have come from either a bog or the surf, it may just look like the real thing. That link should explain in better detail.

Pamela,

Thanks so much! The article looks really good. I've skimmed it and am printing it for bed side reading tonight. Actually the place I was thinking of ordering a large piece of drift wood from....aquarium driftwood...is mentioned in the article. My aquarium is 125 gallon, so really would look nice with a big piece of drift wood. One of the reasons that I am thnking about driftwood is to try and lower the PH ( well water at 7.8 ) The driftwood from aquarium driftwood, is self sinking and does not color the water....which is why I was wondering what the differences are between driftwood and bogwood. The aricle looks like it should answer my questions. I'm off to read it slowly. Thanks again.

Ann...I found some great driftwood on Ebay. Dark brown, no leaching. I boiled it and it sank within hours. It's been in the tank for quite sometime. No discoloration to the water and fish are great. Gives them hiding places and the dealer seems very reputable and was MUCH CHEAPER than in the lfs. SH

Many thanks to all of you. I read all the articles, checked ebay ( nothing large enough available now ) and decided to order through www.aquariumdriftwood.com. I'm getting a super large piece for $50. The lady said it won't be longer than 36" long, and I want a piece with some branches to add height. I'll let you know what it's like. The lady told me they had even sold driftwood to the Boston Aquarium!.

SH, you must have been posting at the same time that I was. Thanks for taking the time to find those pieces. I certainly didn't see them when I was looking on ebay last night...however will admit my ability on the computor is limited. They really are beautiful pieces! Hopefully the one that I ordered will be as nice. It will be interesting to see what those pieces actually go for. thanks again for your help. Ann from Vermont

No problem Ann....I was looking for a small piece to put in my 10 gallon quarantine/hospital tank. For a 'stupid little piece of wood', it turned out to be a gorgeous piece and has great color. Fish love it to find shelter under. I'm sure your piece will turn out great. Fortunately, it was small enough to boil. I soaked it for a week and it was still floating. I boiled it and it sank within thirty minutes. Have fun. SH
