i got a new piece of driftwood for my tank and it wouldn't sink i realised that when i was washing it with hot water before i put it in the tank it stays afloat what should i do??

It will sink eventually but in the meantime you could tie it to a rock or piece of slate.

how long will it take to sink???

How long is a peice of string

it depends how long the water takes to penetrate the wood untill its weight is greater than its buoyancy

How big is the piece of wood?

ya i know that was a dumb question but still it came out of curiousty but i meant if anyone has experienced this before just approx it's maybe 1 feet in length and got a #105### load of holes in it

I've just purchased a chunk of driftwood from Maidenhead Aquatics myself, so I'l glad I saw this thread. The guy in the shop said to stick the driftwood into boiling water and leave it for 24 hours before putting it into the tank. Does that sound about right?

yes it is done to avoid any kind of parasites on the wood from entering the fish tank

I pre soaked mine in hot water in the bathtub for about 2 days to release the big wack of tannins and prevent too many water changes in the first few days.

Wedged it down with a wellington boot!

Only issue was putting it in the sink to stop drippage when taking a shower each morning!
When you do put it in the tank, you will still need to secure it (big rock on it) to prevent it floating back up. Mine took around 6 months to become completely waterlogged and non-boyant (spelling)

Soaked both of mine for some time in a bucket just enough to hold it down in the tank and just got away with water changes to clear up the tank.

My first piece however was placed in when I was cycling my tank and due to the increased temperature you have the tank at for the optimal bacterial soup I got away nicely with a mostly soaked out log come the end of the cycle.

It varies though, my much larger and 2 piece took around 2 weeks of soaking and 2/3 weeks of being jammed down using the hood in my tank to finally sink.

any time I buy bogwood (similar idea) I usually boil it and then leave it in buckets of hot water changing it as often as work/spare time allows for 48-72 hours, gets rid of the tannins and also lets it soak so it won't float.

a good way to keep it down is to silicone a piece of rock to the bottom, just make sure to use 100pc silicone as the anti mould agent in some can kill your fish.
