A few newbie questions...

1. Is drift wood and bog wood the same thing?

2. Do you have to do anything special with it? ie boil it first etc.

3. If I buy a 2nd hand lump of drift wood from another tank do I need to do anything with it?

4. Is drift wood beneficial to the tank or just a nice decoration?

5. How much is a sensible price for a peice about a foot long?

Thanks in advance :good:

1. Is drift wood and bog wood the same thing? nope

2. Do you have to do anything special with it? ie boil it first etc. can soak it in boiling water to remove tannings

3. If I buy a 2nd hand lump of drift wood from another tank do I need to do anything with it? give it a good wash in water

4. Is drift wood beneficial to the tank or just a nice decoration? can soften the water with its tannings, thus being beneficial to south american fish.

5. How much is a sensible price for a peice about a foot long? i would pay around £10

Thanks in advance :good:

bogwood is from a bog, typically bigger chuncky pieces wheres as driftwood floats, more branchy pieces.
but that wood is neither, thats called mopani wood :good:

and what is mopani wood!?

Any advantages/disadvantages for it?

mopani wood is a type of wood
advantages are appearance. to my knowledge it doesnt leak much tannings to this could be an advantage meaning the water wont turn tea colour, but could be a disadvantage in the fact is you kept fish who like slightly acidic and soft waters it wont provide that

heres all you need to know about the basics of wood, bog wood, drift, mopani.

Well I got myself some mopani (i presume) wood - just got to pick it up later.

There were a few different shapes on offer, so I bought three pieces and will use the piece which looks best in the tank and sell the other two pieces.

They're 2nd hand pieces from ebay (very local to me) so they have already been in a tank, will this help with them staining the water - I was hoping that would mean they wouldn't stain it as much? I'll still boil them and rinse them.
