Hello,

My 28 gal tank developed white spot last week, The only fish I had up untill this morning was 1 female adult Molly and 14ish fry. From what I could see only the adult Molly had whitespot, Her fry seem fine, Alough they are in a breeding net so maybe that helped. I was on my 5th day of treating the whitespot, The adult Molly died this morning.. I tested the water and the he Nitrite colour was darker than my testers highest value! Nitrate was also kinda high, 0 ammonia.

I had to leave for work at this point as I was already late.

When I got home I obviously had to change a substantial amount of water. I decided I would move the tank whilst I had the tank empty as it wasn't in a great spot. I filled a bucket with tank water and left the filter running in it:

I drained the tank:

I moved the tank, Refilled, Added the heater, Filter and the old water that was in with the filter, I thought it best to keep a few gallons at least.

I also added another filter, As My tank way too was under filtered before. It's now filtering 1100 litres per hour, Instead of 250ish.

So my questions:

1) There is only 14ish Molly fry, Which are in a breeding net in the tank, They are about 12mm long. I can't get anymore fish into the tank untill tomorrow about 6pm (The time now is 11pm)
Will the bacteria in my filter be ok untill I can get more fish?

2) Could my tank go into a mini cycle since I changed so much water?

3) Do I still need to worry about the whitespot since the only fish that seemed affected is now dead and i have changed 95% of the water, And should I keep using the treatment?

That's about all I can think of for now, Many thanks! :good:

In the incubation stage, whitespot lives probably in your substrate. Its not until the free-swimming stage that it normally affects the fish. This being the case, i would leave your tank for a few weeks, unless you have changed your substrate.

I think re-stocking your tank at the moment could be a disaster waiting to happen. See how the mollies get on. :good:

I agree with backtotropical. You should not add anymore fish. Most likely the tank should do a cycle on its own. Since you added the old filter in it. Also whitespot would possibly still be in the tank. The only and best way to combat it is to add some medication to the tank. Keep doing tests to the water for the normal things and treat with white spot things as directed (i think for 7 days) Hope that helps abit

Okay guys , thanks for the info :)

Is it normal to have high nitrites + nitrates but 0 ammonia? I'm not sure at all because i've never had this happen before. I put rocks from my garden in the tank a few weeks ago but took them out after about a week, maybe it's related?
