aww poor thing.

I hate it when someone over feeds my fish when I'm away. :( You come home and see all this rotted wasted food at the bottom. Geez. It's better not to feed them at all!

You just have to educate them before you leave..

I once had 11 tanks and like 40 bettas to be taken care of while I was away for a week.. I did a walkthrough of how to feed each and had no problems..

..and my sister had never kept fish before.

i get money bags, put the amount of food id put in the bags, flakes and sinking pellets, and label them monday 1 - monday 2 - tuesday 1 - tuesday 2 etc and it works fine! and i leave a packet of bloodworms labelled friday 1 and another labelled friday 2. never fails :D x

We are going away next week and the neighbour has kindly agreed to feed our fish. We brought a couple of the tablet holders that have each day marked on them and are going to fill them with food. That way we don't have to worry about the fish being overfed.

Healthy adult fish can easily go for a week without eating. The next time you are gone for two days don't even worry.

Pill packs, the ones with a compartment marked for each day of the week works if you have younger fish. I have an agreement with another local breeder for dealing with really young fry.

I do the pill compartments- one for each tank and both the tank and the pill box numbered, so they can't end up putting the wrong food in the wrong tank. And all other food is hidden away! A lot of my fish are always either young, or the kind that needs to eat fairly frequently, also I generally go away for a fortnight.

We have had good results on two trips with automatic (battery-operated) feeders. Then, on the last trip, one apparently malfunctioned and gave out too much food to our dear betta...We returned to find the poor fish dead with lots of white gooky stringy stuff --in a weblike pattern all over the tank. Oy!! The other feeder on our 10g tank worked fine --for our mollies. Betta was in a 2 gallon bowl (w/heater)--which may have had something to do with them.

Also, many have mentioned recently on this forum that there are new gel-type vacation feeders which seemed to work well) as opposed to those plastery ones that are not supposed to be good for the guys...
