my fliter has broke,a fluval u2, so ive borrowed a brand new aqua one maxi 102f, which looks really cheap, anyway, ive put it togethe ,and there is 2 cartdriges with charcoal in, but i dont know where they go, the instructions dont even mention the cartdridges, they will only fit in filter if i take 1 sponge out, cant wait to get my fluval u2 filter exchanged at lfs ,as i think nit s agood filter, when they dont breakdown, im lost for ideas where the little cartdridge goes,any1 any ideas?

Surely you need to be putting the media from the U2 in the new filter to keep your good bacteria anyway?

+1 what fluttermoth said.

There is no reason to use activated carbon in an established aquarium, so unless you do have a very specific need to remove something from the water, I recommend that you leave it out.

Otherwise, the best place for the carbon is probably in the top of the filter housing (and sponges in the bottom half).

thanks for your help. im stil learning, thanks for all the advice youve given me

Hun, the biggest and main purpose of the filter is to provide a place for bacteria to live, the ones which change ammonia into nitrite and nitrite into nitrate. Oxygen is all very good, but it's not a great help if there bacteria which you have been so carefully cultivating on the media from U2 are not there or dead. Do you have a liquid test kit for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate?

You probably want to reduce feeding, or not feed at all, for a few days, even if there isn't a problem.
