Hi everyone, we have just got our first fish tank a few weeks ago and were donated some media, when I requested it from a local pet shop.

He gave me a very dirty part of the white layer on a Jewel filter (the poly pad), and i have sandwiched a small portion of this in between the green and blue filter media.

It has been in for 5days now, and the levels of the water are great, but I am now thinking that maybe it is in the wrong part of the filter, or does it not really matter?

Thanks in advance, we have already read loads on the forum, and are getting better with the search button, but still not perfect, so sorry if this has already been covered.

I presume you either have fish in the tank or are adding ammonia for a fishless cycle?

The poly pad will be fine where it is for seeding purposes.

Yes, we are fish in cycling with a few white cloud minnows. They have been in for about 6 days now, and seem very happy and eat once a day.

I did a lot of reading by way of google searches before stumbling on this forum, and the views on fish in cycling, I chose to put the minnows in and really hope we dont stress them, or even worse kill them.

Doing bi-daily water tests and so far all readings are good for this point in the cycle (I think  ). pH of 7.4, and trace amount of amonia (going towards 0.25 colour), and only trace amounts (slight colour, but not enough to guage on the scale card) of nitrites and nitrates.

I can see there is a very similar thread running atm, so any reply appreciated, and I will obviously keep an eye on the other active thread.

Thanks again.

Make sure those levels stay at trace for ammonia and nitrite and you sould be fine. They both need to be below 0.25 at all times, and if you get more than a faint colour change from the kit, a 20-30% waterchange is required. 50% for 0.25-1ppm and larger waterchanges still above that

All the best

Hello guys.

It's now almost a year since setting up our first fish tank and I thought it would be nice to update you with how the tank has come on.

Had only a handful of fish die (1st 3 months) since the tank was installed, and even the original white cloud minnows are still going strong.

Any comments/thoughts appreciated. We appreciate the music is not to everyones taste but better than just white noise in the background.
