I was just doing ym Homework (which I still should be doing), when I came into the upstairs landing, to find a trail of torn up plastic plants! Obvoiusly I imediately investigated, find my dog had gotten into a bag with 30+ used plastic plants and decorations.
He apparently liked the taste, because he has completly destroied atleast 10 plastic plants.
Should I be concered?
He had chewed on a piece of wood, that I planned on using in a future tank. Is it still safe for my fish?
What is it in the stuff that he liked so much?

It was just odd, thought'd I'd share a post on it.

PS: I'm not as concerned about my dog as I am about using those plants again.
Comet (dog) has eaten 40 chocolate candy bars, OVER NIGHT, and had nothing worse than poopey problems :/
He's a silly one, yes indeed... ;)

If you can answer what the dog liked you can tell me why to dogs like to drink out of the tanks more than their buckets of fresh water or the toilet :)

I should think it will be fine to use the stuff for the fish. Check Comet's gums for splinters though..

Chocolate bars? Holy s***, thats one hell of a dog youve got there!

My dog once ate a whole bag of cichlid pellets in about five minutes....
god dammit..........

I would not be too concerned about re-using the plants. Dogs appear to relish algae, and will consume algae-coated plants. They also appear to love drinking fishwater, my lovely dog drank out of my pond every day. It has something to do with the water being more natural, and i dont mind my dog doing it, as it helps her (and i cant say no to my dog) and does not bother the ichthyoids. Some persons dog got into her oscar tank one time and splashed all the water out. The oscars lived, the dog got a bath.

Have you got a pond at all?? Haven't you ever noticed he drinks out the toilet/muddy puddles? Have you ever noticed that you put some fresh tap water down & he sticks his nose up at it!!!

Dogs love smelly stuff to eat & chew on, a bit of dried up algae & wood not's gonna harm him I wouldn't have thought.

I don't know about yours but mine would rather dink out the toilet than our tapwater, can't blame him sometimes though

Get an ro system & you won't look back B)

you do know that those 40 bars of choccie could have acherly killed your dog.

Chocolate is highlyToxic to them. Have to say if the dog was mine, I be more worryed about him than my fish.

My rabbit enjoys chewing my plastic plants. At least he used to, I try to keep them all up high now

On the subject of dogs being partial to gross things. My dog will snub her nose at a clean bowl of water and scratch at the door to go drink the green water from my daphnia tank outside. What a weirdo. She's also chewed very expensive pieces of driftwood that I foolishly left outside, and I agree, they should be fine to use. What's a little doggy slobber?

Yea, it would be fine to use. Dog saliva is quite sanitary, and wouldn't do anything to your water quality or fish.

I agree though - check your dog for splinters, and make sure to keep it away from chocolate, grapes, and raisins! Those are the three most toxic foods for dogs.

My dogs and caths both drink out of the tanks AND eat the fish food... I can't open a container of fish food without one of my cats running up and sticking her head in it. And if I leave the fish food low enough for the dogs to reach.. Well, you can imagine. Silly little animals, they are.

I did actually, and we took him to the vet, and the vet thought he SHOULD have been dead, but like I said, he only had poopy problems.
And you dont think I would perpously feed my dog 40 bars, do you? Chocolate is expansive!
I was doing a school fundraiser, and silly me, left a box out on the counter.
He pulled the box off the counter, chewed it open, and ate the candy bars. Tinfoil, paper and all.
Of course, between the vet and having to pay for the candy bars, it did cost a pretty penny -_-

Dogs are crazy when it comes to food. We once had a dog that could open our fridge and would steal all of the food from whilst we were all asleep or out. We stuck on childlocks and she still got through them. My mum was had to increase her weekly shop 3-4 times weekly and this became a very costly game... Mum stocking the fridge and trying to keep the dog from eating it all >.<

I wouldn't worry about the plants and wood. Give them a scrub and a rinse with hot kettle water and they should be sorted :)

I'm sure the chocolates weren't for the fish so I'd put all my money on these 2 incidents being completely unrealted ;) Ethos was just trying to say how lucky his crazy dog is when it comes to eating stuff it shouldn't and that if the dog was strong enough to cope with all though chocs a bit of wood shouldn't be a worry.

I knew chocolate could be toxic but grapes and raisins? How do grapes and raisins effect dogs? I'm gonna have one upset dog when I tell him "No more grapes!".

I have Australian Cattle Dogs and they are the kings and queens of eating stuff they shouldn't. They are adept at catching small animals. My red one grabbed up a skink (lizzard) as I was dumping their wading pool one summer. I saw her and yelled Drop It! and went to grab her and she swallowed the skink whole! I called the vet who said just to watch her. She was fine. They also can't resist catching bees in the yard and they shake their heads violently when they get stung in the mouth, but it doesn't stop them from catching another bee.

These dogs are gross too in the fact that they will "mark" i.e. pee in their kiddie pools, the girls seem worse than the boys about it. Sometimes I get so disgusted cleaning up that I just take the pools away from them.

One of the cats will eat a lot of different people food, Doritos are one of his favorites. And the Ragdoll will not leave a person alone if they are eating apples with caramel apple dip. She will paw the caramel off the apple piece. My husband goes in the bedroom if he wants to eat a can of tuna, no way can one eat that in peace with cats around.

When we rescued our youngest one, he had a lot of food issues and could not be trusted. I had laid out out-of-date ostrich meat to mix with greens for the dogs and came home to find that he had chewed through the paper and eaten the whole pound of it. His belly was huge. I had to start putting everything in the microwave to keep it away from him. He would also grab a loaf of bread off the counter and bite hunks out of it so that there wasn't a decent piece left. He got over that when he figured out there would always be enough food here.

This has to do with fish: If I am talking to Sal (the gold gourami) or Paris (the Paradisefish) and baby talking them right by the glass, the cats have to come over and try to get my attention. They are jealous of the fish.
