Hello everyone,

I have two tanks, both with the same 6700K lamp, and the one tank I have with white gravel, looks 300% brighter. This leads me to believe that the reflective properties of the white gravel might make more light available to the plants I have. Does that make any sense? So does the color of your gravel and decorations factor into the wattage of the bulb(s) you should buy?

Thanks in advance.

white reflects light, black absorbs it... so yes, that is possible. it is also possible that the contrast makes it look brighter.

You also have to take into account that fish are used to a fairly dark bottom and are designed to blend in with a dark bottom. Using a light coloured substrate can stress the fish out and also cause their colouring to look washed out. Some people prefer light substrate, it is a matter of personal preference, just keep an eye on your fish though.

I hadn't thought about light gravel stressing the fish out, thanks for the idea. I'll have to take that into consideration.

I have two tanks, both with mollies. The one tank has had light gravel in it for a year and the fish seem to be doing well. I have to say the possible increase in light in the tank doesn't wash out their colour much (IMHO). To me it almost brings out their colour more.
