OK, today I used the money I was going to spend on eith a nitrate test kit or a gravel vac on... some aquarium salt and a product called Tetra Bactozyme. Normally I'm not one to jump into things like this but I am impatient for my blooming tank to finish the longest cycle ever (seemingly) so I can get one of the red VT bettas I'm drooling over. So. Does the Bactozyme stuf work?
Also, I've put some of the salt in. When I get my betta, who has been kept in freshwater, will it matter? And will the aquarium salt mess up any of my test results? And... is it toxic if you put it on your chips (and fish:p) LOL I mean will you keel over if you eat any? Not that I have, just in case.

Hi,

I dont own or know anything about bettas other than you don't keep 2 males together. :)
(but they'll get nipped to death by a tiger barb :flex: )

I have never heard of or used Tetra-Bactozyme b4.

I assume the other 15 peeps have the same sentiments. :)

But i have used Stress-Zyme with good results. (I assume they're the same sort of thing?)

All I need to know about bettas is will anything nashty happen if I change it from fresh water to FW with aquarium salt.
And as for the bactozyme, I was just wondering whether there are live bacteria or whether they are dead as in Cycle.

why did you add salt?

salt should only be used if you are treating injury or something similar...

I put the salt in for several reasons-
1. The bettas the shop get are usually a little bit nipped and I want to kill off anthing they might have.
2. Apparently it's beneficial.

How much salt? My betta keeps his tail trimmed by chewing on it  so I always put in 1 tsp per gallon to prevent problems (just remembered I forgot to add the salt during his last water change. shoot). I also add 1 drop of silver per gallon. So far he hasn't had any problem with finrot or other infection despite a lot of chewing *knock on wood*.

btw I saw him chasing his tail the other night. It would have been funny if I hadn't been messing with his chewed up tail for so long.

As long as you acclimatise him when you put him in, I think the salt will be okay as long as you followed the correct dosage instructions. Float him in his bag for 15 mins to get the temps the same, then open the bag, roll the edge into like a collar, leave it floating (mine always seem to fall over so i use a plastic clothes peg to 'pin' them to the side of my tank) and put in a little of your tank water. Put a little more water in every 5 minutes over an hour or so, and then net him out the bag into the tank, and discard the bag and water. (This means if there was anything bad in the lfs water you're not adding it to your tank).

Not much salt- the reccomended ode was 1 tbsp per 5 gallons, mine is about 5 gallons and I put less than that in.

I personally would have avoided both the salt and the other product (I assume its a cycle product like Stress Zyme). IMO salt should only be used if the type of fish requires it or if there are known health issues. Not just in case, especially with new fish. Also it seems to me that most of those cycle-in-a-bottle products, especially those available in the UK, are little more than placebo products and of little value. Certainly Stress Zyme has not helped me in the past. Gravel, filter material or bio-balls from an established tank will do the job for certain and often for free.

I'd imagine they don't work :) But we in the shop after getting a water test (I have test kits, I just wanted to check the results and look at the feesh) and my nitrites was high, so the man said, just leave it, it will cycle soon, maybe add some bacteria products? And as we were walking out, dad saw them and went, ah thats what he meant, get some, they might help your tank.
No big loss, He still owes me a fiver :)

I add about 1/5 tsp of aquarium salt to my 1 gallon betta tanks and find that it keeps them healthy. It works for me. :)
