Hi everyone, I think I need your help. I've had my male black molly for approx 2 1/2 weeks now. My 25 gallon tank is only 3 1/2 weeks old and has not yet finished cycling. Today i noticed a white spot...no it looks more like a white piece of fuzz at the base of the fin on his back (sorry.. i don't know the proper term:) )
Is this normal? Is this something I should be concerned about? I don't recall seeing it before. Also... if this is a disease, should i be medicating the tank? If so, how will this affect the cylcing process? Current readings: amonia - almost nil, nitrite - .2mg/l , nitrate - 10 mg/l.

Please help me! I don't want to lose 'Howard'.

Thanks so much!!
Val

sad news.... I went back out to check on Howard's status and found him dead in a corner :( I am now very concerned about my remaining 3 mollies and 5 platies. None of them have the same spots or act like Howie did (a little bit reclusive and hiding in the corners). Is there any hope for them? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If it was a white fuzzy spot, you probably had fungus on him. I had that on my corys, so I had to treat the tank. Is the fuzzy stuff on the gravel or decorations?
I used the little green tablets called Fungus Cure, and it worked great!

HTH!

Hi Annastasia, no I can't see any fuzz on any of the plants or decorations however I just noticed white spots on my male platie and some white under his bottom fins.... this isn't looking too good is it?

It is molly Spot and is due to adverse water conditions. It Is most probably not White Spot!!! Mollies are quite particular and especially in a new tank they are likely to catch it. Mollies like salt and can even live on reef aquariums so the salanity of your water may have had something to do it but High rIte/rAte most probably did it. Try a search for molly spot
