One of my betta tanks has oily stuff on the water surface. Could either of these do that?
Although my other tank is fine and has them both too?

The oily film can occur in tanks without any surface turbulence. Having an airstone bubbling away gently can help get rid of it. Otherwise use a clean tissue (without anything added) and lay it flat on the surface for a second. The oily stuff will get taken up by the tissue and you can throw the tissue in the bin. You will usually have to do this each day to keep the oily film at bay. You can also try doing more water changes and wipe the inside edge of the tank near the surface. The gunk that builds up around the edge will often encourage the film.

Thanks Colin :) I did try getting it off with a sheet of kitchen towel today, but it didn't work too well. The filter is in the lid with a waterfall outlet back into the tank, but I have the water level as high as possible to keep the water movement to a minimum for the fish. I might try an airpump.

IME the oily film does come with melafix and pimafix...also from fishfood and just by putting your hands in the tank...paper towel should take care of it laid across the surface.
cheers
