does betta need plant?

Hi...i have a male betta living in a 1/2 gallon glass bowl. He has a fake plant with him in his bowl. But I kinda want to move his plant out, so he'll have more place to swim. So I'm just wondering is betta the kind of fish that needs place to hide, or feels ok in the open? Because I alway see him swimming around his plant, but not through it and doesn't rest behind it, so I'm wondering does bettas even like plants? )

Absolutely bettas are one of those fish that hide and need a plant in fact you should make a cave from rocks for him

My betta "sleeps" in his plants. It's funny to watch because he swims around and around it and then sort of collapses on it.

Well hes not exactly sleeping just resting you see all he's doing is patrolling his area or territory and every now and then he dozes off on the job
