Hi

I have seen all the things said about walmart and evryones views on it. But now I have actually seen terrible treatment of fish I know how angry it makes people.

I have emailed the garden centre which keeps the fish twice over a few months, only to see things get worse, and no response. I wont go on about how terrible it is there, but does anyone know what sort of action the RSPCA take on ill treatment of fish? or what can I do to improve the conditions of thier fish?

Thanks for any help or advice

Seb

Fairly indifferent, I think. I am still waiting for a reply to the letter I wrote in the spring about the AWFUL advice given in the RSPCA's own handbook on fishkeeping. Still, no harm in trying- write to them.

I'm not sure about the RSPCA, but is there any fishy organisations that may be interested??

forget the RSPCA, even though fish are covered by the protection of animals act 1911 it is very hard to get a prossicution for the mis-treatment of fish.
the best course of action is to contact the relevent department of the local council, as it is them that issue the licence and them that have to power to revoke said licence. I think it is the enviroment department, but not sure.

Also see if the shop in question is a member of OATA (Ornamental Aquatics Trade Assotiation) if they are a member OATA can and will do what ever it takes to help rectify the situation.

thanks for the replies everyone.

Definatly think the council option is a good route to go down, I hope they dont mind that technically i live in Kent, but anyway, I've got to do something. I dont want to get a prosecution against these people, but they are selling and looking after something that they have no idea about. I think it is because the garden center uses conglomerates for its different departments, this one just happens to be particularly crap :/

Any other ideas and advice extremely welcome

been looking at D.E.F.R.A., but I think they are more to do with other things, using thier search engine, all I have found are articles on fish and chip shops, public aquariums and fishing shops

EDIT:
Just emailed OATA, hopefully they will be able to do something, as I guess a garden centre chain would be part of it.
