no you cant form what i know mopani driftwood bogwood beech oak and a couple others work

You certainly can't just use any wood in a tank, no. Some produce resins that foul, or even poison, the water.

The very safest way is to buy your wood from a shop. You can collect wood for yourself, but you must be able to identify the tree it came from and it needs to be long dead. You need to avoid all soft woods (like pine) and most nut producing trees (hickory, walnut)

I don't know what trees you have near you in SA, but you're safe with fruit tree wood (apple, plum, pear).

Most woods will be suitable.....they do need to be long dead (dried out) and preferably a hardwood

Some softwoods can be used, they just will not last as long, and will eventually rot, so not worth adding to a tank unless its a short term setup

You best best is to pick up the wood you like and then soak it in a container and watch how it behaves :) I collect for myself and i dump the wood into my pond for a while before it goes in my tank
