Hi ,i`ve got a 28l uncycled tank ,could i put just a betta in ,straight away and a new filter and heater, would the ammonia have any effect on it as a lot of people have them without filters ,thanks in advance.

Any ammonia level above 0.25ppm has the potenttial to kill or permantly damge the fish's gills; bettas the same as any other fish.

Either fishless cycle the filter, get some mature media, or I guess you could try a fish-in cycle, as long as you're prepared to put in the hard work.

I would have thought you'd been on the forum long enough to know the answer to that question by now!

No you couldn't.

Just because other people do it doesn't mean it's the right thing to do. Fishless cycle your 28L, or better still, wait until your 110L has been cycled a while and then remove some of the media to your smaller tank, and then fishless cycle it, it won't take as long that way. Then get a beautiful betta with some live plants and snails, or some larger shrimp (smaller ones will probably be eaten) :D

Yes,i know but can`t understand why people put them in small uncycled tank without a filter or heater, how do they control the ammonia in that situation

I wouldn`t put a fish in a tank without a filter or heater, just can`t understand why it doesn`t kill the fish when they do it,was only considering putting fish straight into a tank with a new filter and heater, without being cycled, but won`t ,as i thought that betta might be able to withstand ammonia?

The only way to control ammonia without a filter is to do lots of water changes.

Maisy, do you not have an established tank already? Just take a small amount of media from it.

No you can't. Just use media from your cycled tank in your 28 litre's filter. That's what I did and it cycled within a few days.

When i put the media from my cycled tank into the 28l,do i leave the tank without fish in ,until it`s cycled or can i add the betta straight away?

Add the fish straight away and keep an eye on water parameters, if you have ammonia then do water changes.

All i`m having in there is a betta, until it`s fully cycled, probably only add shrimp after that anyway,as told i couldn`t add pygmy corries as well,do don`t like the idea of anything else

They either do it because they don't understand or don't care about how fish produce ammonia and therefore need a filter, or they are doing daily 100% water changes to keep the ammonia at 0.

Don't add a Betta till it's cycled.

most people that keep these fish unheated/filtered are breeders and a high number of them are from Thailand so no need to heat and they get daily w/c

As said once you get your new betta just take a piece of media from your other tank and pop that in your new filter, thats how i add my betta tnaks :good:
