ok the big question is do u turn it off at nite i got a nurtasomthing for the thing and its a canister with stuff that came with it and im so confused to what it says everywhere one say one thing and other say another so whats the best way to go about it with out killing the fish i got some plants have no idea what htey are and will take pics later for identifacation but quest is not to kill the fish and i just set it up tonite and says takes 2 - 12 hours b4 the 1st bubbles comes and up to 48 hours for it to work really well all the bubbles and stuff

and i dont like java moss they have at lsf as they are always full of algue slime which looks gross unless u can tell me that my ottos will clear it up and make it look good but i can see ricca looks great and what other ones for carpet is ther out ther .. i would love to cover the rocks ...... thanks for the help and i will check back on in the morning as im going to bed now im in canada

I think it's just the folks with pressurized co2 injection who turn it off at night. A yeast-based system won't ever generate enough co2 to kill the fish.

One word of caution though; before you decide with plants to buy - what kind of light do you have on the tank? Java moss is a very low light plant. Ricca requires much higher light levels.

Co2 in itself won't kill fish I believe, but if it's knocked over or something it will cause a large amount of co2 to get into water which causes rapid ph changes which can kill the fish.

empty the bottle fo the mixture that came with the kit and take a look at the pinned topic about the kit...the home made mix is far far better. will give much better co2 and within 40mins really it starts.

With yeast based you can leave it running overnight, i am going pressurised next monday/tuesday so i will have to run mine off each night

ok i have read the post and still not understanding and the light i prob only need low lite type plants as its hood lights and the few i have in ther is low light plants im not so sure how strong the hood lights are.... and i got the ladder still not bubbling yet and i m wondering if im supposed to fill the water to the rim or something i dont see any lines as it says to the line what friggen lines so im just guessing and will try the yeast stuff ... pls give me the recipe im simple terms step by step if u dont mine and thanks again for the help

Hi! the "lines" that are being referred to are inside the nutrafin canister, and really aren't "lines" at all, so much as vertical "protrusions" (for lack of a better word) along the inside. If you're using the mix that came with the Nutrafin kit and you still don't have bubbles, join the club! That mix is horrible; seems like have the packets don't work. Toss it, and make your own; it's cheaper and works so much better! Here are the directions: http://www.fishforums.net/Nutrafin-Co2-Bas...de-t164548.html

(oh, for your lighting issues; if you just have the standard tube light in the standard hood, that would be considered a pretty low-light set-up. To improve things without spending a fortune, look for the replacement bulbs that say they promote plant growth. They're a different color spectrum than the one that came with the tank, and your plants can use the light more efficiently).
