Rather than the common fare of fish flakes, granules, pellets, live foods, cucumber, peas etc have any of you guys actually pushed the boat out entirely and tried other things?

I understand some of you may find what I'm about to say a little offensive to fishes, but hopefully not too many.

I've tried tiny bits of cooked chicken, bits of watered bread, shrimp, cranefly, greenfly, lacewings, and all to no ill-effect. In fact with the fishes I've got they all seem to be hungry for more of the (good) stuff!

In fact, I think given the opportunity many fishes will indulge in a multitude of food stuffs. I think this variety may even improve the health of many of my tanks occupants.

What have you been feeding your fishes?

I'm not so sure about feeding fish all that stuff. The way I look at it, I try to do my best to mimic their natural environment. Granted, i may not be able to give them some of the same greens as they have, so they get peas or cucumber instead. However, things like bread and cooked chicken are like nothing in their natural environment. I think i'm gonna stick with my flakes, shrimp pellets, peas, cucumbers, zucini, lettuce, algae wafers, and blood worms.

Most foods are fine for fish as long as they don't contain cereal products, high citric acid content or fat, so im afraid bread(which is also bad because it can expand in their stomache and cause major constipation) and chicken isn't very healthy for them, they may seem to enjoy it but then again they are used to eating anything you drop in their tank and don't know any better- think of it as feeding a 1yr baby, they will put most things into their mouths but that doesn't nesarsarily mean its good for their health ;) .
For some tried and tested alternative foods, melon, muscles, tomato, cockels, prawns and slices of fish will all go down a treat :) . Most insects are fine too as well as shellfish and shrimp  . Be careful with feeding high protein foods though, meaty products can play havoc with water quality so it is always best to do a small water change the next day and make sure there aern't any leftovers floating around in the tank  .
