I say my tank is 55 Gallons, because that is the total capasity without gravel, rocks, plants, fish, etc. But with all the stuff in the tank, I only have about 40 G of water. So what do the sites mean when the say "minimum tank size". Are they talking about the minimum tank size your fish needs, or the minimum water volume? Also, what do you guys go by when you say how big your tank is?

i know that, sorry to confuse you. but i meant when they say "minimum tank" on the internet, so they mean water volume or overall tank size? :D
Aaaah. :*) Sorry to be so dense!! I think they mean tank size, not water volume.

ok thanks. and no problem. i see how its so confusing, i didnt explain the topic very clearly
Actually you did. You shouldn't be taking the blame for my stupidity! Still :*)

Oh well, have a nice night!

is this really true? then i will change my profile to reflect my full tank volume of 55 gallons!
it only holds 40 after all of the decoration i put in it.

"tanks" alot guys!

I have always been lead to believe that you always refer to the actual size/volume of the empty tank. If we had to refer to the volume of water that the tank held once gravel, decs, plants etc were in there I am sure that a lot if not most people wouldn't know that information (I dont) and a lot of overstocking mistakes would be made.

With the tanks 'empty' capacity stated the information is easy to find (or calculate from dimensions), and a couple of q's such as "is it heavily planted?" or "do you have a lot of rocks, wood, slates etc?" would establish the free space in the tank.

Also the 'empty' capacity is more than the 'real' one so it sounds better :D
