I use water conditioner in the water I add into my fishtank and I also let it set overnight before I add it. I know the bottle says "instantly neutralizes harmful chemicals from tap water" but I don't believe in instant anything.

Is it necessary that I wait 8 hours or overnight or am I being overly cautious? What do you do?

I put it in right away, too, after a really good stir of the bucket. But I've questioned if it really could work that fast, as well.

Well I just put it in the bucket then fill up with water. There are doubts if you even need to use dechlor on a cycled tank.

Someone here has seen experiements shwoing how close to instant (read less than a second) that de-chlor works. I always dump the de-chlor in and the fill up from the cold tap, so if anything could go bad, you would have thought it would have after 2 years.

I, and a few others, have seen on another forum how de-chlor doesn't appear necessary, even with chloramines, on a mature tank.

We had a demonstration by a rep from Tetra about a year ago on dechlorinators. He used a yellow tagging agent to mark the chlorine & chloramine. Imagine putting a few drops of yellow food coloring in a container of water, but in reverse. It works that fast.

Could you please explain why?
Two people (one with chlorine in the watee supply, one with chlormaines) stopped using water conditioner. They measured 4-5ppm chlorine from tha tap. Straight after a 50% water change they found chlorine at 0.25ppm. Five minutes later that the level was at 0ppm.

In a non mature tank, the chlorine would take up to an hour to clear, but in any mature tank (more than 6 months old) there was no detreiment found from the ommision of water conditioner.

It has been hypothesised that the bacteria colony can break the connection between cholirine and ammonia in chloramines and use the aminia before releasing the chlorine to the atmosphere.

Could it have been there was still excess water conditioner in their tank water before they tried the experiment?

The chemical reaction is nigh on instantaneous but the water has to be swirled to ensure good mixing

No, the experiment was carried out over a long period of time, in fact it is still going on as he does not use dechlorinator anymore
