Do they just not like each other?

I have a male guppy who is so "excitable" that he goes after every female fish in the tank, no matter what kind of fish they are. He particularly likes 2 platties. I bought him 2 female guppies, and he wants to just keep going after the platties and avoids the guppy females. They swim up to him "inviting" him, but he ignores them and swims after the platties. Does he just not like them? Now, one of the females keeps chasing the other and bullying her. Does she not like her? Do fish prefer certain fish of their own breed and not like others?

Guppys have a very high sex drive and they are known to try and mate with practically everything, but by any chance are your new females pregnant? If they are more than a week pregnant that would explain his lack of interest in them.

I had the same problem with my male guppy. He just can't get enough of platies!
Turns out my female guppies were pregnant on purchase. Sadly one died the same night we got her but the other is doing fine!

She does try to gain the attention of my male guppy but the most he does is butt her bulging belly from time to time.

Good luck with your fish and lets hope you do get some fry soon. I am leaving mine in the tank and letting nature take its course. Having said that I have provided some fantastic planted areas and logs too. Keep your fingers crossed for me!!

I would watch the bullying guppy, if I were you. I had a female who started to get aggressive after having a batch of fry, and it gradually got worse and worse to the point where I had to get rid of her because she would attack anything else in the tank until she killed it. Not a nice fish. Obviously I'm not saying this is going to happen to you, but I would definitely recommend keeping an eye on things.

Good luck! :)

Thank you. That was very informative to find out that he could be ignoring them because they are already pregnant. Fish behavior is fascinating. They probably are pregnant because I have noticed their bellies getting bigger.

As for the aggressive female, I guess I'll just keep an eye on things. I once had a male black molly who killed every female molly I put in the tank. I did take him back.
