Do They Develope The Large Bumps On Their Head?

I saw some pic's of them and they had the bumps (what is the correct name for it?) I was unaware of this pretty cool trait.

I have to juvenile Convicts, one pink and one zebra...

Its a trait of male cichlids. It develops when they are mature and feel dominant. It like a deer or elk growing big antlers. Shows the opposite sex that they are a healthy animal that will be a good mate because they have good genes. also can be an intimidation towards other males of its species. I'm not sure but it may not develop to that magnitude if they are not the dominant fish in the tank, it may just be a little lesse prominant as a slight raised area of the forehead.

it seems fish only grow them if they feel the need too in most cases.


like ox says, when they need to prove there the dominant fish etc.


i had a male con with a massive hump but since ive got rid of the females he seems to have lost it a bit so i dont think its guranteed to keep it if your fish does grow one.

Some females will grow nuchal humps also.

So now i just have a black convict (female, pretty sure cuz it has a pink/red belly) and a pink convict (male, no sign of red any where) the female seems to chase the male around every now and then, is this common? not really aggressively, but more like causing mischief.

should i get another female?

that wouldnt really work with cons because when a pair formed the third fish would most likely be killed unless your tank is 100G plus.



unless shes physically doing damage i wouldnt worry.
