Hi,

Just wondering - do platys pair off? I have 1 male and 5 females (see other thread!), but the male and one of the females always swim around together, the male following her everywhere... She gets jealous and swims after the other females if they come close. No fin-nipping or anything, she just swims right at them until they swim away. It's strange, because he's just got a different female pregnant...

Might have seen one of my post, or not. But mine did. Also seen another post somewhere else they theres did. But all fish tanks are different.

These fish tend to prefer one female over the other. However, they do tend to breed with more than one, it's just that the one female seems to hold some sort of allure for him.

Isn't he a locky boy, lol. Has a harem of females to breed with and a favourite concubine. I think it's natural, all my mollies & platies have paired of like that.
But in my tank, it's the male that chases everyone else away. :D

tempestuousfury is right on - there's always one female that male doesn't chase away all the time, but breeding is never limited to just that female from my experience...

What I notice is that the male aggressively chases away most of the females, but for some reason, chases very lazily one particular female. When he gets close, she dissapears fast! Then he (again lazily) swims around, looking for her... This pattern continued for few months but eventually the female gave up, and doesn't seem to notice the male at all...

She does give birth more frequently than any other females...

Well I only have 2 and they are a pair. Currently my female is pregnant and I'm waiting for her to drop.
