some people on here say Show Quality fish

does that mean they show there fish ( like a dog show )

I know some can go to 'show competitions' where the best fish can get awards. I have seen examples of the 2002 Swordtail, was a stunning electric blue.

Exactly that. (only their owners don't take them for walks) :D
I have shown many fish in my time as a member of Bradford and District A.S.
Below is a link to Y.A.A.S. Where you might find out some more info on how the whole thing works.

The most common types of fish usually used for shows/competecions are Koi karp, Discus, Bettas and Guppys because they come in a huge array or colors and forms.
Would be cool if they did more tropical fish shows over here in england, its mostly koi karp around where i live.

I saw that post too and my husband and I had exactly the same conversation, I even said "like dog shows but for fish"

I wonder if I have any "show" quality fish? I do have some beautiful Koi carp.....how cool would it be to have a "Best In Show" award for one of your fish?

I bet they are all those fancy frilly things though, not good honest ordinary fish. Like when you watch Crufts and just know although they picked it best in class, the Black lab is never going to win best in show, that'll go to some pom-pom looking thing with a name you can't say and a kennel name like "Lord Lucan De Pomfrey of Bessington"

We get the odd Koi shows fairly local every now and then which is quite nice to go and see, but i have never seen or heard of any tropical ones in my area.

It isnt only those fish that are on the show benches almost any fish you can think of as been shown at sometime my bro inlaw used to show tinfoils he used a 30 inch tank to show him in he also won the fish of fishes with him at the doncaster festival . we used to get up at the crack of dawn just to get all the fish ready and gallons of water . It is a very enjoyable pass time follow the link that BigC put on it will tell you more

I have several

I showed my bettas hard and heavy last year and I won the IBC Novice Grand Championship for 2005
I've only competed once with the big dogs this year and one of my girls got a second and another a first place.
Our local betta chapter has hosted three shows so far in the past 8 months, we plan another in Spring. We average about 600 fish per show. It's quite fun.

Fort Worth Cichlid As. hosted the 2005 cichlid convention here in FW this past summer, I went and it was awesome. I have pics from both betta and cichlid shows here on the board, either in bettas or MAP. Might be worth a search,I'm still hosting the pictures.

I have had a couple of Best In Show awards, the first was when I was 10 with a white female Betta. I also won a Best In Show award with a Botia Sidthimunki and a Madagascan Rainbow.

There was allways one thing I wanted to acheive and only managed it twice and that was to take all four places in one class, I managed three places many times but all four only a couple.

wuvmybetta, please post pics of the cichlid convention. Was that the American Cichlid Association ( ACA ) convention? I always wanted to go to one of their convetions but they are too far for me to go. They only held it here in California once before :(
