my male betta has built a bubble nest and the female is looking very plump with a small white dot coming out of her opening (bum i suppose). They both seem quite eager to be on the same side of the tank. Does this mean that they are ready and want to breed?

If they do, do i need to put her in a tub in the male side of the tank for a day before putting them together?

:D any help appreciated!

If the female has vertical stripes on her sides she is interested. If she does, just place her on the males side ( no need for a tub or anything ) and then wait. The male will be bit rough on the female, but don't be worried. After a while she will go over to the nest and then they will breed. Now I must mention that this "while" can be anywhere from 10 minutes to a week, so you just have to be patient. I hope this helps.

I would suggest doing allot of research on breeding before doing it, there is quite a bit involved. It does sound like they are ready but there is no rush to get to it just yet, be prepared first and get evey thing you need. The FAQ section on here is very useful.

:good:

thye sound like they are in the mood but are u ready for 300+ babies? are the male and female breeding quality? they dont ever have to breed they can live a celibit life. cause if u breed u could un up with a ton of fish. do u plan on keeping them all or do u have a sales or giveaway option?

she escaped into the male side yesterday, and they did go over to the nest and start looking at it. She was even building bits herself :) The male got a bit rough, I got scared and moved her back to her side!

that was my only problem, the space and number of babies. I thought that in the first spawing quite a few would die anyway. But, my spare tanks are filled with baby platies at the moment, so if I ever sis breed them I'd have to wait. The local fih shop have been taking the platies, maybe they would take the bettas as well, or I would try selling them on ebay :S I dont know though!

oh wow! lots of babies, maybe i'll have a longer think about it and wait till I've got more time to do it. (I'm at college at the moment)
I keep watching the bubble nest, it gets bigger every day! And the female keeps trying to get over to him!

so are there certain times that they're ready to breed?

Not certain times......but you do have to condition them for a couple of weeks before putting them together and when you do put them together they need watching very closely in case the male is too rough with her.
