I purchased a good sized java fern a couple of months ago. Many of the original leaves have died away but there has been a lot of new growth and I've already harvested 5 plantlets from it.

Is this a form of 'melt' that this plant can suffer from when being moved or is this a pretty natural cycle?

The leaves shouldn't be dying. When you say dying what is happening to the leaves? Are they changing colour?

Sometimes plant-lets are produced when the plant is distressed and unsettled. It acts a bit like the seasons of the year, if there are changes they will produce plant-lets and die off. It is a natural process, but not the best in an aquarium. I still wonder if you're missing something in the tank.

hmmmm

the leaves are turning brown and breaking off from the rhizome. Each of the plantlets I have found have been at the tips of the older leaves. Lots of new leaves have grown since adding to the tank.

now dosing 2.5ml Easy Carbo & 1.5ml TPN daily.
8hrs light (2x20w)

you was adding less wasn't you of the Easycarbo? also you might want to just up the TPN by .5 of a mil. Personally i would up it by .5 every 2-3 weeks, until this stops. I have just had a look at the pics of your tank, and the fern looks as though its missing something. Remember you can't OD a tank with ferts, as long as you keep up with your weekly W/C.

correct, I was only dosing 1ml up until you advised the increase, so only been doing 2.5ml for the last 1.5 weeks.

I also have the issue with the vallis where some are snapping, browing and growing algae over the last 3-4" of the leaf. But other vallis sitting directly in the flow of the 305 filter outlet dont seem to have the problem.

I would do as above and give it a couple of weeks with TPN increased. See what happens and if there are still problems bump this thread. :good:
