I always do as I figure they could rust over time.

If I need to anchor things in place I use cotton thread and tie it to either weights or rocks. (You can also use fishing line so you won't see it).

Yes, take the weights & any foam they might have on them & plant into the substrate, if they need any weighing down some small rocks or pieces of slate will do until they take hold
