I changed the filter on my only tank on friday, and whilst i was setting it all back up i noticed one of my neon tetra's looked rather large and round. i wasn't sure if it was bloating, eggs or just the way i was looking at it. Saturday morning rolled round and the fish was trying to swim upwards and looked like it was struggling. I removed it and the other 5 tetra's from my tank (two had started to go white/pale on the red markings, i've had two previously die of Neon Tetra Disease a few months ago so i didn't want to risk anything). An hour or two later and the fish was dead.
Sunday rolled round and i found another one dead in the quarantine tank.
This morning i wake up to another two dead tetra's. I have two left, which im guessing won't last the week. There fins on the dead ones were all shabby looking but i don't know if the other fish had just nipped them when they had died because they didn't look too bad when i originally placed them all in the QT tank.
The fish in my main tank seem fine still, and have been having a whale of a time with the tetra's not in there.

Is there anything i should do with the remaining fish? either the tetra's (i think they will just die out) or my community tank? I have a lot of inverts, so i can't add anything to the main tank.

Was the new filter cycled when you put it on the tank or did you put cycled media from your old filter in the new filter? If not, it sounds like you threw your tank into a mini cycle and that's what caused the demise of your neons. Any idea on your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels?

i didnt put a new filter on the tank, i just cleaned the one i have which has been running for well over two years, and the neon was looking bad before i even put the filter back on the tank which means it was sick before then. the last two died this morning. Never getting neons again, been nothing but trouble since i got the tank

my water levels are PH: 6.4, Amm: 0, Ni: 0, Na: ~40

Signs of ntd are as follows.

Red stripe area will look bleached out.
Small white patches on red stripe area.
Milky substance on red stripe area.
Blue area will turn a golden yellow colour.
Black lining around the tail area.
Lumps that go to a point.
Fish will leave the shoal.
Fish will become restless.
Fish will sometimes look skinny.
Bent spine.
Fish will swim in an odd manor.
Later stages, popeye, dropsy.

All the fish that you suspect have ntd I would end there suffering, there no cure for ntd.
Don't buy any new fish for a least 4 months.

I stiped the tank down when they all died of ntd and started again.

The remaining fish died this morning. I had to euthanise two of them over the weekend and four died very quickly. Four months sucks lol.
I have just looked over the two that died this morning look like they have signs of dropsy, yet they didn't yesterday or i would have euthanised them asap. The first one that died from the 6 had bloat and was swimming in an odd manor. It wasn't one of the two that had the bleached red stripe though, those two died over sunday and monday (i euthanised one)

How did you strip the tank down and start again? I have baby apple snails, fry and breeding shrimp in the tank :/

Bleach the tank, rinse well, let dry out for aday.
Bleach plastic plants, rinse well, let dry out for a day.
Same with filter and heater.

I would buy some new substrate.
If you have live plants throw them away.
Throw filter sponges away aswell, and add new ones to the filter.

woah, i have atleast £100 worth of plants, fish, substrate, filter media etc. in my tank. Not to mention livestock still in there. I'm definately not stripping it down. I'll just ride it out instead

It's up to you.
That's why it's always best to isolate new fish for up to 4 to 6 weeks.
