ok i've read the bettas starter guide and maybe i've missed it, but nowhere does it say anything about ideal temp for a betta tank.

depends what your ambient temp is of the room the fish is going to be in, if your in a hotter climate they you wont need one but if your in the uk for instance then you will need one set between 26 - 28 degrees for when the temp drops out of the blue

another question : if i get a 2 gal tank how long do a fishless cycle take?
 
You don't need to cycle the tank for a Betta as long as the water is dechlorinated he can go straight in

Imho it's always best to cycle a tank first before putting a fish in it. People do things differently of course, but a cycled tank is kinder to your fish.

HERE is some good information about tank cycling. My betta tank only took 3 weeks to cycle :good:

The joys of Sunny Essex deffo means get a heater :lol:
