I have a 125l tank which currently has a Fluval U3 internal filter.  Despite regular water changes, there is a lot of poo and "debris" floating about in the water, and it's a little cloudy at times - I know I have overstocked the tank slightly, so would it be sensible to go up to a fluval u4 filter - which is designed for a bigger tank but may clear the water?

I would try and go for an external filter if you can afford one; much easier to maintain and keeps the water much clearer. Eheim and Fluvals are both quite good and if you can get one rated for a 250l tank it should be spot on.

thank you - do you recommend a particular model of external that would be good?

I had an Eheim Classic 2213 running on my 125 litre when I had it and that kept the water clear without pushing the poor fish straight into the glass at the other end of the tank!

The Classics are good, but not self-priming whereas the newer models, like the Eheim Ecco Pro 200 or the Fluval 205 (both are good for tanks up to 200l, so you would be fine with those or may want to go the model up depending on your stocking) are much easier to get started!
