Wow this is strange, I changed the gravel in my tank, from black, to an off-white more natural looking gravel.

But now my fish looks so different! Did he change his color to match the substrate? The following photos show him with this new gravel, then with the old black gravel.

I did not touch these photos up, and did not change the lighting, the only difference is the gravel-color.

I think I like this fish's color more now, he sorta looks like a saltwater fishie! with those cool powder-blue marks on his mouth area.

i have a blue acar that does that. maybe its because there stressed how much cover have you got in the tank? somewhere for them to hide...

I noticed fish change colors to match the gravel color sometimes.

i got my bolivian rams from big al's in a tank with very dark graverl, almost black, and the fish were all very dark. the gravel in my tank is almost white.

when i put them in my tank, they were pale, like the color i'm used to seeing them. fish do that

my common pleco has some color markings when he rests under the driftwood, his color sorta matchs the wood. if he's just against the glass, he goes all black!

crazy fish

there are two parts of this that make the fish look different

1. the lighter gravel reflects more light back up which when you take a pic of the fish it makes it appear to be lighter.

this can be solved though the settings on your camera to reduce the amount of light allowed through the lens

2. I also tend to agree with the theory of because the tank is lighter he is taking on a lighter color as a defensive mechanism
