do golfish eat plants

Well, funny because generally goldfish do like plants, to eat that is. But the previous poster probably should have at least told you what plants may survive.

My guess is that you have not had plants before. They require a lot of light, at least 2 watts per gallon, 10-12 hours per day (the dark period is just as important as the light period) among many other important things.

I have a tank with plants and goldfish. You just have to be choosy about the plants you use. I do have bare-minimum light on this tank. It is a 29gal with a double flourescent strip and a single strip. (60 watts total). I have java fern, giant Val, Mondo grass, and the floating hornwort plant. I am going to add more powerful light soon, and am going to experiment with different plants to see what may not get eaten.

If you have the standard aquarium hood, with one bulb, this is very low light. The only plant I have experience with that may survive with low light and goldfish is one called a Java Fern. It doesn't look like a fern, it is bright green with broad leaves.

Oh, by the way, you may not want to add all these fish to the tank with your goldfish. Goldfish like cooler water, and excrete a lot of ammonia. Also, many tropical fish like to nip on fins of the slower moving goldfish. If you check out a good fish store, you will never see goldfish together with tropical fish.

Hope this helps.
